I think their documentation for Linux could be a bit better, but one could say that about most any product. Most of them originate from my own ignorance and preconcieved notions. Now that I’ve gushed all over the place, I have to tell you that there were some bumps in the road. I just got Serviio to work well, on Linux, the way I want, and I’m happy. I am not affiliated in any way with Serviio or Mr. A good value for 25 Green Backs (US dollars).

I think the Pro version also has web based playback, supports some cool Android players, and will surely lead to world peace. They all loaded, and all the different formats either played natively or transcoded as necessary on my TV’s media player, without using any Pro features. I have 16,000 audio files in various formats.

That said, the free version did cover everything I was after. The Pro version has some cool features that I want, so he’s getting some of my money he deserves it. It looked promising until it started throwing segmentation faults while scanning completely legal audio files. It doesn’t look like it’s actively developed any more, but even if it was, it had already burned me enough. Some might even say “sucky.” MiniDLNA doesn’t have (non-expiramental) transcoding and it EATS all my memory while it’s loading its database. Yikes, the completely open source offerings are very weak. I decided to add a media server to my little “NAS Gizmo”. Just promise to seed it for a while, OK?)īack to the DLNA / UPnP server part of my story. (My template has no PID in it so I would be happy to share it via torrent. Sometimes a tftp server and a syslog server come in real handy when a client hasn’t backed up their routers or even bothered to capture logs. All these services either run all the time or launch on demand. On it I run ftp, tftp, Samba, rsyslog, my Calibre eBook Library, and now my Serviio Media Server.
I would call it my Swiss Army Knife, but I won’t since I’m sure that’s some sort of trademark infringement. I have my own, home built NAS like server. It’s been two weeks! Two weeks since I set out to have my own DLNA UPnP media server.
